Money20/20 Europe in Amsterdam: key trends & insights

This year’s Money20/20 Europe in Amsterdam made one thing clear: fintech is no longer experimenting with the future of money – it is actively rebuilding its infrastructure in real time.

Several key trends stood out in particular:

1️⃣ Stablecoins quietly became infrastructure, not narrative
Stablecoins were no longer discussed as crypto-native assets or speculation tools. Instead, they emerged as practical settlement infrastructure for B2B payments, cross-border flows, and treasury optimization.

2️⃣ Real-time payments are becoming the default expectation
Instant payments are no longer a competitive advantage – it is becoming baseline infrastructure across Europe. The direction is clear: payments are converging toward real-time, always-on systems with embedded compliance and fraud controls.

3️⃣ AI is shifting from “assistive” to “agentic”
A major theme was the rise of agentic AI – systems that don’t just support decisions, but increasingly participate in them.
However, a consistent counterweight emerged: trust, governance, and explainability are now limiting factors, not optional layers.

4️⃣ Fraud, compliance, and trust are becoming product layers
Instead of being back-office functions, fraud prevention and compliance are being embedded directly into payment rails and infrastructure.

5️⃣ Financial infrastructure is fragmenting – then being reconnected
From SEPA Instant and regional wallets to tokenized deposits and programmable money, the ecosystem is rapidly diversifying. But the real challenge discussed in Amsterdam was not innovation – it was interoperability.
